Retro Casserole Dishes – SOLD

Johnson Bros casserole dishes

Johnson Bros casserole dishes

If you’re a lover of retro you’re going to be a big fan of these Johnson Bros casserole dishes! How fabulous is that pattern? The shape is quite plain, although very pleasing on the eye, but really it’s the pattern that steals the show! There are a few fine scratches to the design from years of use, as well as some minor damage to the one lid (which looks like it might have been caused during the manufacturing process), but other than that these dishes aren’t doing too badly at all – in fact I think they’re still deserving of their name ‘Snowhite‘ (presumably a reference to the matte white glaze)!

Dimensions: Each dish measures 24cm in diameter 11cm tall (with lid on)

Price: R150 each

Johnson Bros Espresso Cups and Saucers – SOLD

Johnson Bros espresso cups and saucers

Johnson Bros espresso cups and saucers

How lovely is this set of vintage Johnson Bros espresso cups and saucers? I know it’s very simple, but I love the ridged pattern and the clean white glaze. The one cup has some peculiar stains, and there’s a manufacturing defect on the handle (it looks like the handle’s cracked, but it’s not), but the rest of the set is in excellent condition!

A wonderful gift for anyone who’s serious about their coffee – Justin has a collection of espresso cups that sit on top of his coffee machine and he gets great pleasure deciding which cup to use every morning!

Dimensions: Cups – 6cm tall x 6cm in diameter; Saucers – 11.5cm in diameter

Price: R150 for the set

Note: Mint puts up three new items every weekday. The first post goes up at 07h00, the second at 08h00 and the third at 08h30. You can subscribe to our daily email which goes out at around 09h00 by clicking on the pink envelope on the right hand side of the blog (more…)

Retro Johnson Bros Coffee Pot – SOLD

Retro Johnson Bros coffee pot

Retro Johnson Bros coffee pot

Some people might not see the attraction in a coffee pot that’s so simple, but personally I like the restraint the designer has shown with this Johnson Bros coffee pot. The shape of the coffee pot is interesting enough without having to plaster it in graphics (although I’d probably like that too!). I particularly like the design of the lid and the squareness of the handle – they make it immediately recognisable as a retro piece.

A good looking coffee pot in near mint condition.

Dimensions: 23cm tall x 10.5cm in diameter

Price: R130

Johnson Bros Coffee Set – SOLD

Johnson Bros coffee set

Johnson Bros coffee set

I’m not quite sure what to make of this Johnson Bros coffee set? It’s unlike any other Johnson Bros pottery I’ve ever seen, and I’ve hunted high and low for something similar online, but with absolutely no luck! I love the square design, and a matte glaze is always a winner – in fact the moment I spotted the coffee pot I knew that it was coming home with me, regardless of who made it or when it was made. Which is probably a good thing because I actually have no idea when this set dates from! The squareness of the shape makes me think it’s 1980s, but the style of the coffee pot handle is much more reminiscent of the ’60s. Johnson Bros were actually taken over by Wedgwood in 1968, so it’s more likely that that’s when the set dates from, although it’s possible that they continued to stamp their wares ‘Johnson Bros’ even after the takeover, so I can’t say for certain.

An unusual and rather striking coffee set in excellent condition.

Note: There are only five cups and saucers.

Dimensions: Coffee pot – 25cm tall x 10cm wide; Milk jug – 10cm tall x 6.5cm wide; Sugar bowl – 5.5cm tall x 11.5cm wide; Cups – 8cm tall x 5.5cm wide; Saucers – 14.5cm in diameter

Price: R320 for the set

Collection of Platters – SOLD

Collection of platters

Collection of platters

These are the last of our wedding platters – I promise! And because they’re the last ones and because I really have had my full when it comes to platters, I’m selling them at the bargain price of R55 each! There are one or two marks here and there, but overall they’re in pretty decent nick. They’re not the largest dishes, but that’s sometimes a good thing, and for the money they’re good value.

Attractive, functional and cheap as chips!

Dimensions: Each platter measures approx. 30cm long x 25cm wide

Price: R55 each

Johnson Bros Espresso Cups and Saucers – SOLD

Set of 6 Johnson Bros espresso c&s

Set of 6 Johnson Bros espresso c&s

These Johnson Bros cups really are very small, so I would think that they’re proper single shot espresso cups. The cups are quite plain with no markings, but the little saucers are a lovely green colour (the true colour is only really visible in the last pic), have a really nice shape to them and are marked ‘Johnson Bros’. Looking at the maker’s mark though, and some of the manufacturing defects, I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that these were ‘seconds’ – if such a  concept existed back in the day. They’re really lovely, but the finish isn’t quite what you’d expect. Regardless, it’s a fantastic little set that would look great sitting on top of your coffee machine – the top of Justin’s coffee machine looks a little like a crockery shop, but there’s something very appealing about that!

Dimensions: Cups – 5cm tall x 5cm in diameter; Saucers – 10.5cm in diameter

Price: R120 for the set
