Johnson Bros Platters – SOLD

Johnson Bros 'Green Cloud' platters

Johnson Bros ‘Green Cloud’ platters

I thought that I had reached the end of this Johnson Bros ‘Green Cloud’ service, but then I remembered these great platters, which were one of the main reasons that I bought the set to begin with (getting seriously forgetful in my old age!). My favourite is probably the round platter, just because of its shape which is different to most platters that you see. It’s also quite a large dish, so would be perfect for a big dinner party. The three smaller oblong platters will also come in handy when you’re entertaining a large crowd- I really like the idea of matching serving plates. The slightly larger oblong platter has a manufacturing defect in the form of a blue mark – I assume something must have gone a bit funny with the glaze – and the rest of the platters also have some minor imperfections that came about during the manufacturing process, but there’s very little in terms of actual wear and tear.

A great collection of platters for people who are good at entertaining!

Dimensions & Prices:

  • Round platter – R130; 31cm in diameter SOLD
  • Large oblong platter –  R130; 36cm long x 25cm wide  SOLD
  • Medium oblong platters – R110 each; 31cm long x 25cm wide (3 available)

Johnson Bros Jugs – SOLD

3 Sep

Set of 3 Johnson Bros jugs

Set of 3 Johnson Bros jugs

These little Johnson Bros jugs are the last of the Green Cloud service that I bought. Interestingly while all of them have the same pattern name, the glaze on the gravy boat is slightly different to the jugs, but I suppose that’s what happens with glazes – if pieces aren’t dipped in exactly the same batch of glaze, there’s’ a chance that they can come out slightly different tones. Not that it really matters!

Sadly there’s a hairline crack just underneath the handle on the medium-sized jug. The crack is noticeable, but the jug is still functional and it seemed a shame to discard it when it can still be used. The small jug and the gravy boat seem to be in good enough nick, with only very minor signs of wear.

A very sweet set of jugs in reasonably good condition for their years.

Dimensions & Prices:

  • Gravy boat – R85; 11.5cm tall x 19cm long x 9cm wide
  • Medium jug – R40; 11cm tall x 13cm long x 8cm wide
  • Small jug – R40; 9cm tall x 11cm long x 7cm wide

Johnson Bros Teacups – SOLD

27 Aug

Johnson Bros 'Green Cloud' teacups

Johnson Bros ‘Green Cloud’ teacups

These are the big sisters to the smaller espresso-sized cups that we featured a week or so back. Sadly there are no saucers (although who really uses saucers these days!), but to make up for it there are eight cups, instead of the usual six. They’re also a decent size, so you can use them for a proper cup of tea. There’s a bit of damage to the one handle, but I think that it was probably caused during the manufacturing process – structurally the teacup’s still absolutely fine.

A lovely set of  cups from Johnson Bros that will be perfect for everyday use.

Dimensions: Each cup measures 7cm tall x 8.5cm in diameter

Price: R140 for the set of 8

Johnson Bros Casserole Dish – SOLD

25 Aug

Johnson Bros casserole dish

Johnson Bros casserole dish

This fantastic retro casserole dish is part of the same Johnson Bros service as the salad bowl and teacups that were for sale last week. It has the same great shape as the bowl, with the added bonus of having a lid to keep your food warm. There a mark along the rim of the dish – I can’t quite work out if its damage that was caused during the manufacturing process, or if it’s a small chip, but either way it’s nothing major and doesn’t detract from the dish too much.

Dimensions: 26cm long x 23cm wide x 10cm tall (with lid on)

Price: R140

Johnson Bros Teacups – SOLD

22 Aug

Set of 5 Johnson Bros teacups

Set of 5 Johnson Bros teacups

I’m not quite sure if these are tea or coffee cups? The shape looks like tea to me, but they’re quite small so might be better suited as espresso cups – but are they small enough for espresso? I’m not really certain! But whatever they’re meant for they’re very sweet! They’re part of the same Green Cloud series from Johnson Bros that we featured earlier in the week, so have a fair bit of age to them. Sadly one of the cups is AWOL, along with the saucers, so the set is far from complete, but looking at how Justin drinks coffee it’s not often that he uses a saucer and we seldom have six people wanting coffee, so you’ll probably still get plenty of use out of the set, even if it’s not all there.

Dimensions: Each cup measures 6cm tall x 7cm in diameter

Price: R110 for the set of five cups

Johnson Bros Salad Bowl – SOLD

21 Aug

Retro Johnson Bros salad bowl

Retro Johnson Bros salad bowl

I don’t know where my mind was when I took the photos of this Johnson Bros salad bowl – the pics really don’t do the bowl any justice at all! I think the thing that I most like about it is how something that was designed in the region of 60 years ago can look so contemporary – a design that translates that well across generations is one worth noting. And I love the soft pastel glaze, and it’s name, Green Cloud – isn’t that just great? Plus it’s a really nice size, big enough for a decent-sized salad or pasta dish, and it’s in great condition. Really, there’s not much that I don’t like about this piece!

Dimensions: 28cm long x 26cm wide x 7cm tall (at its tallest)

Price: R120
