Melamine Aeroplane Set – SOLD

Pair of UTA Melamine dinner sets

Pair of UTA Melamine dinner sets

How great are these retro UTA melamine dinner sets? I L-O-V-E them! UTA was a french airline that was in operation from 1963 until 1990, when it was absorbed into Air France. I would think that these melamine sets would have been produced not that long after they started out, possibly sometime in the late ’60s or early 1970s. There are quite a few scratches which don’t show up in the photos (whoever nicked them off the plane clearly got good use out of them!), but they’re still in pretty good condition for their years. Obviously no one’s going to serve themselves dinner or breakfast in these wee dishes, but they’d be great for snacks at a dinner party, and the cups are a decent size so could be used for anything really.

An unusual set that you’re not likely to see again anytime soon!

Dimensions: Cups – 9cm in diameter x 4.5cm tall; Bowls – 11.5cm long x 8cm wide x 3cm deep; Trays – 17cm long x 12cm wide x 2cm deep

Price: R75 per set/R140 for the pair

Some Geese and Some Chicks – SOLD

9 Apr

Geese measuring cups & chick egg cups

Geese measuring cups & chick egg cups

To be honest these little geese and chicks are probably a bit over-priced, but I’m finding it very hard to say goodbye to them, so in my mind they’re definitely worth it. The chicks egg cups have been with me for the past five or six years – I bought them from a great retro store in Berlin when my brother and I were visiting my great aunt. Despite being pretty cheap plastic I fell head over heels in love with them and they’ve sat on top of my microwave ever since. But when Justin and I moved back home we bought with us a massive industrial-style coffee machine so we’ve had to completely re-arrange the kitchen, and sadly there’s no longer any room for my lovely chickens.

The little geese are probably the coolest measuring cups you’re going to see in a long time and even  though I’ve got a duplicate set in my kitchen I’m still quite sad to see them go! As I’m sure many of you know, I’m pretty useless in the kitchen, but I still get great joy from my set that has pride of place in my kitchen!

Dimensions: Geese measuring cups (stacked inside each other)- 12cm tall x 18cm long x 7cm wide ; Chick egg cups – 8cm tall x 10cm long

Price: Geese measuring cups – R220 for the set; Chick egg cups – R120 for set of 4

Retro Melamine Cups and Saucers – SOLD

2 Apr

Set of retro melamine cups & saucers

Set of retro melamine cups & saucers

This is without a doubt the most stylish set of Melamine cups and saucers that I’ve ever come across! Isn’t it impressive that such beautiful design exists in something that’s essentially picnic ware? Unfortunately the maker’s mark has all but worn away, so I can’t tell you anything about the history of the set, but going on the style of the cups and the amount of wear you’d need to rub off the logo I’d say they must be at least 50 or 60 years old. There are some areas where the black melamine has worn away, and there are plenty of fine scratches, but it’s the type of wear that you’d expect from something of this vintage. A fine looking set that would be great for a special-occasion picnic or as everyday cups in your kitchen at home.

Dimensions: Cups – 9cm in diameter x 6cm tall; Saucers – 15cm in diameter

Price: R120 for the set

Set of 6 Melamine cups & saucers

Set of 6 Melamine cups & saucers

I L-O-V-E melamine! I always have and always will! I think it’s probably because of the cool colours it comes in, and how durable it is. Which is how these 1960s Melamine cups & saucers have lasted so long – if they were made of porcelain or ordinary plastic, they would likely have broken by now. That being said they aren’t indestructible (I once smashed a whole set by not packaging it properly when I was traveling – other people buy curios of the Eiffel Tower, I buy plastic crockery!), and they also do stain over time: there are a few marks inside the cups that don’t show up in the pics, but overall they’re in decent nick. A good looking set that look great sitting on your kitchen shelves and will prove super handy when your kid knocks over that cup of tea that he’s been balancing on the corner of the table.

Dimensions: Cups – 9cm in diameter x 7cm tall; Saucers – 14cm in diameter

Price: R120 for the set

Pair of Melamine Candle Holders – SOLD

8 May

Pair of melamine candle holders

Pair of melamine candle holders

How great are these retro candle holders?! When I bought them I recognised the style, but couldn’t remember what I had sold that was similar to them. Then I realised that they’re definitely made by the same company who did those fabulous melamine coasters I sold a while back. I wish I knew who made them (and where I could get more!) because I think they’re wonderful! There’s some very slight wear to the chrome fiish, but other than that they’re in great condition. A stylish, punchy pair that will look great on display in your home.

Dimensions: 7.5cm in diameter x 3.5cm tall

Price: R85 for the pair

Set of 6 Eileen Melamine cups, saucers & sideplates

Set of 6 Eileen Melamine cups, saucers & side plates

I’ve always been a massive fan of melamine. In my old home I had a large display shelf in my kitchen where I showed off an orange and green matching set of  melamine cups next to a very fine porcelain art deco tea service – for me the two are just as beautiful! This is a great little set, complete with six cups, saucers and side plates. There are a few scratches on some of the plates, and the one side plate has some marks around the edge of the plate, but considering its age, the set is in pretty good nick. Two of the cups also have white lines down the sides, but this is due to a manufacturing defect as opposed to wear and tear. The perfect set if you have children (or clumsy friends) and don’t want to have to sacrifice style for practicality!

Dimensions: Cups – 7cm tall x 9cm in diameter (at their widest); Saucers – 15cm in diameter; Side plates -17.5cm in diameter

Price: R150 for the set
