Pair Of Midwinter Coffee Pots – SOLD

Midwinter Stylecraft coffee pots

Midwinter Stylecraft coffee pots

How exciting to find not one, but two 1950s Midwinter coffee pots! Im a massive fan of this now retired UK brand of pottery, and I particularly like this 1950s Stylecraft shape. The patterns on this pair of coffee pots (which are slightly smaller than you might expect them to be) don’t seem to be that common, in fact I don’t think I’ve ever seen the pink wheat pattern before? The pattern on the right is known as ‘Blue Harebells‘, but I’m not quite certain of the name of the other pattern – people seem to refer to it as the ‘pink leaf’ pattern, but I’m pretty sure that’s not right! Regardless of the names, this pair are pretty great don’t you think? And they look great displayed as a pair – although I suppose practically speaking there’s no real need for someone to have two coffee pots (unless of course it’s love at first sight, like it was for me!).

Note: The pink coffee pot has some light staining on the inside base (not visible in the photos)

Dimensions: Each coffee pot measures 19cm tall x 17cm wide x 9cm deep

Price: R170 each

Midwinter Milk Jug and Sugar Bowl – SOLD

Midwinter Stylecraft milk jug & sugar bowl

I’ve bought a good few of these 1950s Midwinter milk jug and sugar bowl sets over the years, but as far I can remember this is the first time that I’ve come across this set in pink! I know that it looks a bit salmon-coloured in the photos but in real life the colour is a bit deeper – a wonderful shade of pink! Bizarrely I found the two at separate spots – ordinarily I wouldn’t buy a sugar bowl by itself, but I just loved that colour, so I was absolutely delighted when I found the matching milk jug – what a luck! It’s also nice that this is the larger size of this set – they come in two different sizes and this is the bigger of the two.

A great bit of mid-century design in near perfect nick!

Dimensions: Milk jug – 10cm tall x 9cm wide x 15cm long; Sugar bowl – 7cm tall x 14cm in diameter

Price: R150 for the pair

Retro Midwinter Teapot – SOLD

Midwinter 'Fashion Shape' teapot

Midwinter ‘Fashion Shape’ teapot

Despite the obvious signs of wear I still love this retro Midwinter teapot! The inside of the teapot, as well as the underside are quite badly stained, as is a small section of the lid, but luckily none of the wear is noticeable from the outside. What you do notice is the beautifully muted grey glaze, and the fantastic retro pattern on the lid of the teapot – and of course that great Midwinter ‘Fashion’ shape!

Dimensions: 22cm long (handle to spout) x 11cm wide x 16cm tall (to top of handle)

Price: R150

Midwinter Toast Rack – SOLD

19 Aug

Midwinter Stylecraft toast rack

Midwinter Stylecraft toast rack

Looking at the condition of this Midwinter toast rack you’d never guess that it’s in the region of fifty years old, and that’s a conservative estimate. The Stylecraft shape was first introduced in 1953, but I’d guess that this lovely blue floral pattern came out sometime in the 1960s. The chrome on the toast rack is spotless, as is the ceramic tray, which has space for jam on the one side, and butter on the other – good looking and practical! What more could you ask for?

Dimensions: 22cm long x 10cm wide x 6cm tall

Price: R120

Retro Gravy Boats – SOLD

Pair of retro gravy boats

Pair of retro gravy boats

When I look at these gravy boats I can’t understand why anyone wouldn’t love retro designs! Seriously, aren’t they just fantastic? Both designs date to the 1950s (Midwinter ‘Stylecraft’ was introduced in 1953, and Meakin ‘Studio Ware’ in 1954), but you wouldn’t know it judging by their condition – barely a mark on them!

A fantastic pair and a great example of why we all love retro so much!

Note: The Meakin gravy boat has a manufacturing defect where the glaze hasn’t quite taken (see pics under ‘more’).

Dimensions: Midwinter gravy boat – 12.5cm wide x 20cm long x 8.5cm tall; Meakin gravy boat – 9.5cm wide x 23cm long x 8cm tall

Price: R110 each (Midwinter SOLD)

Midwinter Gravy Boat – SOLD

Midwinter gravy boat

Midwinter gravy boat

The other day I heard a dealer talking about how they weren’t a big fan of Midwinter – I think my gasp was audible! I seriously can’t understand how anyone who’s into retro couldn’t love Midwinter! If there was such a thing as a dealer’s license he should have had his revoked! Honestly! Just look at the lines on this beautiful Midwinter ‘Stylecraft’ gravy boat- I mean really, what’s not to love? Such elegance! And the pattern is also quite lovely. Sadly there’s a bit of wear to the dish, bur I suppose we should just be grateful that it has the matching dish – these are so often missing.

A wonderful example of mid-century design that will look fantastic on your dinner table – no matter what that misinformed gentleman thinks!

Dimensions: Gravy boat – 12.5cm wide x 20cm long x 8.5cm tall; Saucer – 17cm long x 14cm wide

Price: R160 for the set
