Midwinter 'Stylecraft' cake plate

Midwinter ‘Stylecraft’ cake plate

I’m not really the sort to sit down and have a formal tea, yet I’ve always loved these vintage cake plates! They’re much nicer than the chunky versions that  you see at place like Home Etc – for starters the plates are much finer, and are generally from a reputable name, and then there are the handles, which are generally made of chrome. The modern ones are often a plastic coated metal – too shiny and cheap looking! This version is from Midwinter (my very favourite!) and has the most wonderful faux embroidered floral pattern! I’m a massive fan of Midwinter, and as I’ve said, I always like these plates, but the pattern makes this cake server even more attractive to me – so beautifully kitsch!

Vintage Pie Birds – SOLD

17 Jun

Collection of vintage pie birds

Collection of vintage pie birds

I’ve always had a serious soft spot for vintage pie birds – they’re completely ridiculous looking, but also completely functional – a nice combination of quirky and practical. The idea is to put your pie bird in the centre of your pie so that it supports the pastry, and allows steam to escape, stopping your tasty pie filling from boiling up and leaking through the crust. So clever! And I love the play on the old nursery rhyme, ‘Four and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie’ – a bit macabre perhaps, but great fun!

Note: The one bird has some wear to its white base (see pics under ‘more’).

Dimensions: Each bird measures approx. 10cm tall x 4.5cm wide

Prices: Plain black pie birds & pie bird with white stained base- R110 each; Midwinter pie bird – R130

Midwinter Snack Dish – SOLD

13 May

Midwinter snack dish

Midwinter snack dish

There seems to be some confusion online as to whether this beautiful blue & white turquoise Midwinter pattern is called ‘Rhapsody‘ or ‘Meadowsweet’, which is surprising really because it’s not an uncommon pattern – that being said I am writing this quite late at night so perhaps it’s me, and not the internet, that’s confused! Either way the maker’s mark dates it to the 1960s which is in keeping with the style of the dish with its silver trim and chrome handle. The dish is in excellent condition, especially given its age, and will probably last another 60 or so years if well taken care of and loved!

Dimensions: 26cm long x 20cm wide x 15cm tall (with handle)

Price: R150

Midwinter Milk Jug and Sugar Bowl – SOLD

6 May

Small Midwinter Stylecraft milk jug & sugar bowl

Small Midwinter Stylecraft milk jug & sugar bowl

Yet another example of how seriously cool Midwinter pottery is! They might be a bit on the small side (this style of jug and bowl came in two different sizes – these are the smaller ones), but the design is anything but! Designed in the 1950s this Stylecraft set would have been super modern in their day, and I think they remain so today.

A wonderful pair in excellent condition.

Dimensions: Milk jug – 8.5cm tall x 6.5cm wide x 12cm long; Sugar bowl – 5cm tall x 9.5cm in diameter

Price: R150 for the pair

Midwinter Casserole Dishes – SOLD

6 May

Pair of Midwinter casserole dishes

Pair of Midwinter casserole dishes

I’m always delighted to find any Midwinter pieces, and even happier when they’re this wonderful Stylecraft shape – I think it’s probably one of the coolest designs when it comes to tableware! While the pattern might be a bit dated (‘Oranges & Lemons’ was first produced in 1962), the shape of the bowls could have been designed yesterday, so any feeling of being old fashioned just vanishes, well for me at least! There’s some very minor wear to the rims of the bowls and to the lids, but overall they’re in very good condition.

A great example of why retro design is so popular today – functional, but very attractive pieces that were designed to last.

Dimensions: Each dish measures 10cm tall (with lid on) x 22cm in diameter

Price: R170 each

Midwinter cake stand

Midwinter cake stand

Bizarrely I found this Midwinter cake stand shortly after the two-tier cake stand that we featured last week, but that’s how things go in this business – you battle to get something for years, and all of a sudden the heavens open and you start spotting them everywhere! At least I hope that’s the case – I would love to find me some more Stylecraft cake stands – they’re so darn lovely!

Dimensions: 22cm wide x 14cm tall
