Vintage Murano-style ashtray

Vintage Murano-style ashtray

This is one serious chunk of glass – the type of ashtray that you could use as a self-defence weapon if ever the need arose! Sam, who I bought this ashtray from, said that she always thought her mom should keep it as a display piece (because it’s so lovely to look at!), but her mom preferred to use it (good on her!), which is why it’s quite worn in places. There are a few areas where the glass has become a bit matte (presumably from being held or washed), as well as one or two chips, but luckily the damage is mostly on the inside of the glass so isn’t very obvious (it’s the type of damage that you can only see, not feel). And for all its wear it’s still a beautiful piece of glass that will hopefully get to be enjoyed for many years to come – I’m sure that Sam’s mom would be delighted to know that somebody else was enjoying using it as much as she did!

NB: The glass is clear and blue – the pink colour is from the coloured background.

Dimensions: 18cm in diameter x 7.5cm tall

Price: R230

Murano-Style Vase – SOLD

Vintage Murano-style vase

Vintage Murano-style vase

I’m always a little reticent to call a piece of glass ‘Murano’ without a label telling me as much, but I’m a bit more confident with this piece, although I probably shouldn’t be! I have a red lamp base (with its original Murano sticker) that reminds me a lot of this vase, and when I looked online I saw some Murano Seguso Barovier ‘Melon’ vases that had a similar look to this lovely yellow vase. That being said I’ve seen discussions on whether some of these ‘melon’ vases are Italian or Czechoslovakian, so if the experts are confused, there’s a good chance that I could be wrong too! Regardless, it’s a fantastic quality and really beautiful piece of glass in excellent condition. There’re one or two scratches on the underside of the vase, but other than that this glass is near perfect!

Note: The colour of the glass is more yellow (and less gold) than it appears in the photos.

Dimensions: 17cm tall x 12cm in diameter

Price: R450

Murano-Style Ashtray – SOLD

Murano-style ashtray

Murano-style ashtray

With everyone being so super health conscious these days I really should cut back on the amount of ashtrays that I buy – but I just can’t help myself! I’m drawn to these fabulous chunks of glass like a kid is to candy! Aside from the fact that they’re so beautiful (they really are!), the craftsmanship that went into making them is something that we don’t really see anymore. And the few glass blowers that remain are stupidly expensive – and rightfully so – when you look at work from people like Guido van Besouw, you understand what an art form glass blowing really is. So start a collection of glass now, before all the vintage pieces have been snapped up – or you can extend the mortgage on your home to start a collection of contemporary glass!

Note: The ashtray does have some light scratches, particularly on the underside of the ashtray where the wear is more noticeable.

Dimensions: 13.5cm long x 10cm wide x 5cm tall

Price: R170

Vintage Murano-style ashtray

Vintage Murano-style ashtray

This is the last of our Murano ashtrays (well for the time being at least!). It’s a bit more ornate than some of the other ashtrays that we’ve had for sale recently, but is still quite reserved compared to some of the crazier Murano glass that you see – the fact that it’s a single colour means that it doesn’t seem quite as kitsch (not that there’s anything wrong with a bit of kitsch!). The ashtray, which is quite a large piece of glass, is in near mint condition, with very few signs of wear.

A great piece for a collector!

Murano-style ashtray

Murano-style ashtray

I don’t think there’s a Murano ashtray that I don’t like, but I definitely prefer some designs to others. While I like the over-the-top curly madness of some of the Murano glass, I think I might prefer this simpler, more understated version. That being said I’m not 100% certain that it is Murano glass – it’s definitely a quality piece of glass by a proper glass-blower, but I don’t know enough about glass to know exactly where it was made. There are some light scratches, particularly on the underside of the ashtray, but on the whole it’s in good condition for its years.

Murano-style Ashtray – SOLD

Vintage Murano-style ashtray

Vintage Murano-style ashtray

I bought this rather unusual Murano-style ashtray from a dealer friend of mine, who had inherited it from his mother a few years ago. Apparently she had had the ashtray for a good many years, so despite it’s condition (which is near mint!) the ashtray has some good age to it. As with most glass there are some scratches to the base of the ashtray, but that’s about it when it come to wear & tear. The pink glass makes it really lovely to look at, and while the shape is fairly traditional, the glass ‘cubes’ that are moulded into the glass, give it quite an unusual look.

A wonderful piece for a collector – I really don’t think I’ve come across an ashtray quite like this before.

Note: We’ve gone away for a few days, and yet once again I’ve forgotten to take measurements! This is a fairly large piece of glass – at a guess I’d say that it measures 15cm in diameter x 6cm deep.
