National Juicer – SOLD

25 Oct

Vintage National juicer

Vintage National juicer

As far as juicers go I think that this vintage National juicer is quite beautiful! The ’50s pink plastic is so sweet, and for it’s age it’s in great condition, although obviously there are the normal signs of wear and tear. I haven’t actually juiced anything with it, but I turned it on and the engine sounds strong. I sold a very similar Toshiba juicer previously that was almost identical and it did a fine job of juicing carrots and apples – this machine works on exactly the same principles, so I think it’ll be about the same performance-wise.

A beautiful kitchen appliance that’ll have you drinking healthy veggie juices in no time at all!

Dimensions: 29cm tall x 18cm in diameter

National Coffee Percolator – SOLD

National coffee percolator

I have a definite weak spot for vintage kitchen appliances, and when you combine that with my love for the National brand, you get something close to an obsession (I still mourn the loss of my National blender that I had to sell when Justin & I moved in together!). This percolator has seen some serious use, but is still going strong – while the inside is a bit stained, it still works perfectly well, and with a new cable that Justin kindly fitted, I’m confident that it will keep going for a goof few years to come.

A beautifully designed coffee percolator that I would be proud to have sitting on my kitchen counter!

Dimensions: 30cm tall (with lid on) x 12.5cm in diameter (at its base)

Price: R250

National Blender-Cum-Juicer – SOLD

14 May

Retro National blender-cum-juicer

Retro National blender-cum-juicer

Only those very close to me will know what it means for me to be selling my National blender-cum-juicer. When I bought this blender all those years ago it was the first time I had come across National as a brand of retro electronic goods (and it’s been a love affair ever since!), and it’s been the single kitchen appliance that I’ve used for the past five years – I really don’t cook at all, but me and my National can make one helluva smoothie! I love the ridged glass jug, and while the paint work’s a little tired, I still think that overall it’s a very handsome machine! I can’t speak for the juicer – I don’t know if I ever used it – but it seems to operate in the same way as the retro Sharp juicer that I sold last week, and that worked pretty well. And for those of you out there who berated me for getting rid of some of Justin’s belongings when we moved in together, you’ll be happy to know that it’s payback time! I wanted to keep my blender, and Justin wanted to keep his, and guess who won?! But in his defense, he does have a very cool blender – I bought it for him as a house warming gift a few years back, and I’ve never seen one quite like it before or since.

I hope that whoever lands up with my blender enjoys it as much as I have! It’s super reliable, very attractive – and is going to leave a gap on my kitchen counter (and a little whole in my heart).

Converted Retro Heat Lamp – SOLD

13 May

Converted National heat lamp

Converted National heat lamp

I’ve been after one of these for years! I’ve always loved the idea of using a retro heat lamp as an ordinary bedside lamp or desk light, but the bastards (excuse my French) who make the globes use three prongs to attach them to the lamps, as opposed to the two prongs that normal bulbs have. I’ve literally checked each heat lamp I’ve ever seen (and I’ve seen a good few!), so I couldn’t believe it when I picked up this vintage National lamp and it had a screw-in bulb!! Whoop!! I rushed out and bought a nice round bulb for it the very same day, and while it’s a bit smaller than the red heat lamp, I still think it looks absolutely fantastic, so all my hunting eventually paid off ! And this happens to be a super cool example of a heat lamp – first off it’s National (which in case you don’t already know, is a favourite brand of mine), then you have the fact that the National logo is in Japanese (that’s pretty cool isn’t it?), and that aside from an area on the inside of the lamp which was damaged when the label was removed, the lamp is in pristine condition! It ended up a bit pricey after I had replaced the plug and the bulb, but I think it was worth it, plus I’ve held onto the original red globe in case you’re feeling a bit chilly this winter! A very cool lamp that will look just great in any area in your home.

Retro National Alarm Clock – SOLD

12 Apr

Retro National alarm clock

Retro National alarm clock

I know that everyone out there is going to think that I’m completely wicked, but I originally bought this alarm clock for Justin, and while it looked great sitting next to his bed in his man-pad, it just doesn’t go with my slightly more feminine bedroom – so it has to go! But don’t for one minute think that I don’t love it! How could I not? For starters it’s a National, which is my very favourite brand when it comes to retro electronics. There’s the flip-style clock which never goes out of fashion, the tiny bulb which lights up the clock at night (but just enough so that you can see the time) and the radio which works beautifully and will even wake you up in the morning. All round a masterpiece of Japanese engineering!

National Table-Top Fan – SOLD

19 Nov

National table-top fan

National table-top fan

Despite its condition I still really love this retro National fan! The button that controls the oscillating feature is long gone, and the base of the fan is quite worn, but as with most old fans, it works like a bomb! I love the green blades, and it’s built-in (although somewhat temperamental) lamp, which shines a nice soft light when it’s turned on. Summer’s taking a long time to arrive, but when it finally hits us you’re going to so appreciate this baby!
