Vintage Japanese Teapot – SOLD

14 Dec

Vintage Chinese teapot

Vintage Japanese teapot

At first glance I would have thought that this vintage teapot was Chinese (not that I know that much about oriental ceramics!), but after a bit of research it seems that this ‘Phoenix Ware’ teapot is in fact Japanese, and was produced by world-famous porcelain producers, Noritake. I have to say it’s quite different to any Noritake that I’ve seen before – while it’s very delicate, it’s not quite as refined as Noritake pieces tend to be, although I think it has a fair bit of age to it which might explain the difference. The teapot had a set of matching teacups that sadly I couldn’t afford – the teacups were very fine (and quite beautiful!), as is the teapot with its lovely bamboo handle and wonderful phoenix pattern. It also has a removable tea strainer, so you can  choose to use it with leaves or bags. Sadly the strainer’s been damaged, but the repair is barely noticeable, although it should act as a warning to others – this is a fragile piece to be treated with respect!

A wonderful gift for any tea lovers out there – how much more civilised to drink your tea from this delightful teapot than from a plain old mug!

Dimensions: 25cm tall (incl. handle) x 13cm in diameter

Noritake 'Blue Rhapsody' platter

Noritake ‘Blue Rhapsody’ platter

This ‘Blue Rhapsody’ Noritake platter matches the casserole dish that we sold earlier this week. It has the same great 1960s pattern, and as in the case of the casserole dish, is in mint condition!

A lovely piece of Noritake that I’m certain you’ll get plenty of use out of.

Dimensions: 36cm long x 24cm wide x 3cm tall

Price: R140

1960s Noritake Casserole Dish – SOLD

Noritake casserole dish

Noritake casserole dish

This ‘Blue Rhapsody’ casserole dish is quite different to most of the Noritake that you come across. There’s a certain refinement to a Noritake glaze that is easy to recognise, and which is lacking in this piece, but I really like the fact that it’s a bit more naive. The pattern’s also quite different, with a bit of a Scandi feel to it. I like the fact that it’s quite a large dish, and going on the name ‘Cook ‘n Serve‘ (don’t you love that font?!), I assume that you can use this dish in the oven, which is always a nice bonus!

A very attractive casserole dish from a very respected name in dinnerware.

Dimensions: 23.5cm in diameter x 11cm tall (with lid on)

Price: R230

Noritake Casserole Dish – SOLD

Noritake casserole

Noritake casserole

Noritake isn’t my favourite when it comes to dinnerware (I prefer a slightly less refined look!), but it’s easy to understand why it’s so collectible – and why people are prepared to pay the *prices that they pay for Noritake! While my personal preference might be for something a bit more naive, I can still appreciate the beauty and simplicity of Noritake designs. Plus their finish is excellent, which I think is half the reason Noritake pieces are normally in such great nick – I suppose it’s like anything in life, if you use good quality materials, your product’s going to last longer!

* The Isabella pattern was first introduced by Noritake in 1964. This Isabella vegetable tureen is for sale on chinasearch.co.uk for a crazy £60 – that’s just over R1000!

Dimensions: 22cm in diameter x 14cm tall (with lid on)

Noritake Demitasse Cups and Saucers – SOLD

Noritake espresso cups & saucers

Noritake espresso cups & saucers

As with most of the Noritake pieces that I find this set of demitasse cups and saucers is immaculate – not a mark on them! My theory is that people tend to look after Noritake well because they know that it has value, as opposed to other brands like Poole or Meakin, which while just as collectible, may not be as much of a household name. Whatever the reason, I’m very grateful!

A lovely vintage set of espresso cups and saucers in mint condition.

P.S. RC Japan refers to ‘Royal Crockery’, and is a backstamp that Noritake used up until the late 1950s

Dimensions: Cups – 5cm tall x 6.5cm in  diameter; Saucers – 12cm in  diameter

Price: R150 for the set

Noritake Casserole Dish – SOLD

Noritake Progression China casserole dish

Noritake Progression China casserole dish

As with nearly all of the Noritake that I find, this casserole dish is in near perfect condition. I think that it may have something to do with the quality of the materials that they use, but Noritake seems to age really well – aside from some minor discolouration around the rim of the dish, there really are very few signs of wear and tear.

A fantastic quality and super stylish dish that can go straight from the oven to your dining room table.

Dimensions: 22cm in diameter x 13cm tall (with lid on)
