Vintage Japanese Coffee Set – SOLD

Japanese TTK coffee set

Japanese TTK coffee set

How elegant is this vintage Japanese coffee set? I particularly like the shape of the coffee pot which has a scalloped edge, and the most beautiful handle! I’d never seen the maker’s mark before, but it turns out that the letters ‘TTK‘ stand for Toyo Toki Kaisha, a company that was first established in 1917, and has strong ties to one of Japan’s more famous china exports, Noritake. In fact Toyo Morimura (one of the T’s in TTK), and his brother, Ichizaemon, were the founding partners of Noritake. TTK seems to have been an offshoot of Noritake, that later went on to specialise in sanware (a bit of a departure, but I suppose it’s all porcelain!), and still operates today under the name TOTO.

I’m not sure how old the set is? One site dates it to pre-1937 – I’m not sure that it’s quite that old, but it’s definitely got a bit of age to it! Impressive then that it’s in such great condition – bar the two missing cups and saucers, everything is not only present and accounted for, but also clean as a whistle!

Note:: The colour of the glaze is more amber than the orangey-red that it appears in the photos.

Dimensions: Coffee pot – 25cm tall x 10cm in diameter; Milk jug – 10cm tall x 7cm in diameter; Sugar bowl – 11cm tall x 13cm wide (incl. handles); Cups – 8cm in diameter x 5.5cm deep; Saucers – 13cm in diameter

Price: R360 for the set

Noritake Casserole Dish – SOLD

Noritake Pearl White casserole dish

Noritake Pearl White casserole dish

I love the ‘Pearl White‘ glaze on this Noritake casserole dish! The dish has been well used and isn’t quite as clean as a lot of the Noritake that we’ve sold in the past, but the wear isn’t glaringly obvious, and it’s still a very handsome dish! I really do love that glaze – it’s got such a smooth finish to it, and I like the fact that it’s plain white. I think that this design first came out in the 1960s, but because it’s so plain, it crosses generations with ease – you could easily imagine this dish being designed today.

A handsome and hard-wearing casserole dish from one of Japan’s most respected names in china.

P.S. This dish is for sale online for $75 (R750!)

Dimensions: 22cm in diameter x 14cm tall (with lid on)

Price: R140

Noritake Espresso Cups and Saucers – SOLD

Set of 5 Noritake espresso c&s

Set of 5 Noritake espresso c&s

While most people know that Noritake is seriously collectible, a lot of people don’t know that RC Japan refers to ‘Royal Crockery’, and is a backstamp that Noritake used up until the late 1950s. What this means is that you’re able to pick up some very well made china at a very reasonable price, like this lovely set of Noritake espresso cups and saucers! Sadly one of the cups has gone awol, but the remaining five pieces are in excellent condition, with not a mark on them!

Dimensions: Cups – 5cm tall x 6.5cm in  diameter; Saucers – 12cm in  diameter

Price: R130 for the set

Part Noritake Service – SOLD

Part Noritake dinner service

Part Noritake dinner service

I bought these Noritake pieces at the same time as that fantastic casserole dish that we featured earlier in the week, and they’re in just as good a nick! The plates are nice and large  and have that lovely Japanese design on them – sadly there are only five of them though, so will have to be mixed in with some other plain white crockery if you’ve got a full table! The serving dish would be great for some veggies, and the platter would make a nice dish for some fancy hors d’oeuvres!

A lovely set that I wish I had more of!

Dimensions & Prices:

  • Plates – R130 (set of 5); 27cm in diameter
  • Platter –  R130; 36cm long x 24cm wide
  • Serving Bowl – R65; 22cm in diameter x 7cm deep

Noritake Casserole Dish – SOLD

Noritake casserole dish

Noritake casserole dish

This Noritake casserole dish is in fantastic condition! It’s one of the things I like about Noritake – I’m not sure whether it has something to do with the quality of the porcelain, or just because people treasured them, but more often than not the Noritake pieces that I find are in excellent nick! I really like the handle on this dish, and that delicate floral pattern is so beautiful. It’s obviously a very simple piece, and not the largest compared to a lot of casserole dishes that you see for sale, but it is quite beautiful!

Dimensions: 22cm in diameter x 11cm tall (with lid on)

Price: R160

Noritake Coffee Percolator – SOLD

4 Aug

Noritake coffee percolator

Noritake coffee percolator

Despite the fact that it’s super collectible I’m not always the biggest fan of Noritake. But some of their designs really are quite graceful, like this 9-cup Pearl White coffee percolator that just shrieks of quality! The glaze has a fantastic matte finish to it, and aside from a few light scratches to the base (presumably caused by a stove-top) the coffee pot seems to be in mint condition.

A very elegant piece of Japanese design that would look great in any kitchen!

P.S. These Noritake coffee pots can fetch some pretty high prices!

Dimensions: 27cm tall x 15cm in diameter (at its widest)

Price: R290
