Poole Butter Dish – SOLD

18 Nov

Poole Twintone butter dish

Poole Twintone butter dish

This Poole Pottery Twintone design was first introduced in the late 1930s, with this Ice Green & Seagull colour combo first used in the early 1940s, but the maker’s mark on this butter dish dates it a fair bit later (between 1959-1967). That still makes it in the region of fifty years old, and bar some very minor damage to the one corner, this dish is in perfect nick! It’s quite a small butter dish (could it possibly be a cheese dish?), so wouldn’t take a whole brick, but it would be great for serving butter on your dinner table when you don’t want a whole block, but still want your butter covered.

A lovely piece of mid-century design from one of my very favourite pottery houses!

Dimensions: Plate – 15.5cm long x 12cm wide; Lid – 12.5cm long x 9cm wide x 8.5cm tall

Price: R130

Poole Dripped Glaze Vase – SOLD

24 Jul

Vintage Poole pot plant

Vintage Poole pot plant

Without seeing the maker’s mark I don’t think that I would have believed that this vase was by Poole! It’s just not in the style that I normally associate with them, and which they’re so famous for. But regardless of who made it I knew that I loved it the moment I spotted it – of course it didn’t hurt matters when I turned it upside down and saw the Poole dolphin. I like the fact that it’s a decent size – big enough to hold a nice established pot plant, and I love that dark green dripped glaze – so very retro! Sadly it had a hairline crack where a bit of the glaze has chipped away (see pics under ‘more’), which obviously affect its value, but it’s barley noticeable and if you turn it around to face the wall you obviously won’t see it at all.

A very unusual and hard to come by design. As a lover of Poole pottery I’d be delighted to have this as part of my collection!

Dimensions: 19.5cm tall x 16.5cm in diameter

Price: R260

Small Poole Teapot – SOLD

23 Jun

Poole 'Streamline' teapot

Poole ‘Streamline’ teapot

Designed by John Adams in 1935 Poole’s ‘Streamline’ design was given an overhaul in the 1950s, moving towards the more rounded shape that you see in this lovely teal Poole teapot! But while some of the angles were lost, the design still retained a sharpness that even today has a very contemporary feel to it.

Note: There’s a minor defect in the glaze along the base of the teapot, where the glaze has been more thickly applied, but the teapot has no real damage per se.

Dimensions: 11cm tall x 13cm in diameter (at its widest)

Price: R150

Poole Espresso Cups and Saucers – SOLD

12 Feb

Poole espresso cups & saucers

Poole espresso cups & saucers

These Poole espresso cups and saucers match the lovely ‘Contour’ coffee pot that had for sale yesterday. They’re in the same fantastic Ice Green & Seagull glazes, with that lovely turquoise colour offset against the mottled grey. The cups are in excellent nick, but there is some very minor damage to the one saucer – although nothing to get too upset about.

A lovely little set! I wish there were more of them, but when it comes to Poole I’ll take what I can get.

Dimensions: Cups – 5.5cm tall x 7cm in diameter; Saucers – 12.5cm in diameter

Price: R45 per cup & saucer

Poole Coffee Pot – SOLD

11 Feb

Small Poole Twintone coffee pot

Small Poole Twintone coffee pot

It’s been a little while since we’ve had any Poole for sale, so I was delighted to find this lovely little Poole coffee pot! The shape, Contour, which was first introduced in 1963 was probably a bit ahead of its time – doesn’t it look quite ’70s to you? The glaze on the other hand looks like it’s from an earlier decade, which makes complete sense  – this Twintone colour combination, Ice Green & Seagull, was first produced by Poole in 1936, nearly 30 years earlier! It shows you how successful these Twintone glazes were that they were in production for so long! And I’m grateful that they were, because it means that there are still some Twintone treasures to be found!

Note: This is a relatively small coffee pot, so please pay attention to the dimensions below.

Dimensions: 20cm tall x 10cm in diameter (at its widest)

Price: R160

Small Poole Flying Duck – SOLD

8 Dec

Small Poole flying duck

Small Poole flying duck

I’m absolutely amazed at how expensive these flying ducks have become in recent years! Last week a set of three flying geese sold for just over  R1000 on Bidorbuy (I kid you not!), and that’s not even bad compared to some of the UK prices – if this little 1930s Poole fella had his flying mates he’d be going for around 300 quid on one UK website – that’s more than R5000!! Luckily for me (and for you) I bought him by himself, so he wasn’t nearly as expensive. He’s really lovely though, and even flying solo will look great hanging on your wall. I have an assortment of birds and mirrors and all sorts of odd things hanging in my dressing area – it sounds pretty terrible, I know, but it actually looks quite lovely!

Dimensions: 13.5cm long x 10.5cm wide

Price: R140
