Scandi Casserole Dish – SOLD

18 Nov

Egersund casserole dish

Egersund casserole dish

This is the first time that I’ve seen the name Egersund on a piece of pottery, but a quick Google search tells me that this is a name that I should so know – these guys came up with some seriously beautiful designs! The Egersund Fayancefabrik played a major role in the development of the town of Egersund during the 130-plus years that it was in operation. The factory finally closed it’s doors in 1979, and I’d guess that this dish dates to sometime around the late 1960s or early ’70s. There are a few marks on the inside of the dish, and on the handles, but for the most part this is a nice clean piece.

Dimensions: 22cm in diameter x 10cm tall (with lid on)

Price: R160

Scandinavian Art Glass Vase – SOLD

Retro Riihimaki vase by Tamara Aladin, Design no. 1376

Retro Riihimaki vase by Tamara Aladin, Design no. 1376

Founded in 1910 Riihimaki were at one stage the largest glass manufacturers in Finland. Over the eighty odd years that the company was in existence Riihimaki produced some seriously beautiful glass, including this wonderfully simple bamboo-inspired vase, Design no. 1376. The vase was designed by Tamara Aladin who joined the company in 1959, and produced this design in 1970. Some 45 years later and the vase still has such a contemporary edge to it, as do most of the Riihimaki pieces that I’ve researched.

A timeless piece of glass that would look fantastic in a contemporary setting.

NB: Please pay attention to the dimensions below – this is not a large vase.

Dimensions: 25cm tall x 10cm in diameter (at its widest)

Price: R150

Pair of Midcentury Swedish Pots – SOLD

22 Oct

Midcentury Jie Gantofta pots

Midcentury Jie Gantofta pots

Scandinavian design is world famous and I don’t think I’ve ever come across a Scandi design that I didn’t love, so I was quite surprised when I looked up the work of Swedish company, Jie Ganofta – they’ve made some quite terrifying pieces over the years! Luckily though, they also made some very cool pieces, like this pair of cooking pots! I know they won’t be to everyones taste, but their chunky handles, and retro pattens really appeal to me, plus the colours are quite lovely! From what I’ve read, I’d guess that these pots date to sometime around the late 1950s, which is when the company were focusing on kitchenware. After this date they moved more into ornamental ware, which is when some of their scary designs came into production!

Dimensions: Large pot – 19cm tall x 16cm in diameter (at its widest); Medium pot – 6.5cm tall x 16cm in diameter (at its widest)

Price: R220 each

Holmegaard Bone Vases – SOLD

Holmegaard bone vases

Holmegaard bone vases

It’s been absolutely ages since we’ve had any Holmegaard for sale, so I was absolutely delighted to find not one, but two Holmegaard ‘bone’ (or ‘knogle’) vases the other day! Being clear glass they’re not quite as attractive as some of the other bone vases that we’ve featured before, but they’re still lovely to look at – and I’ll never get tired of that name! Sadly the one vase has a very slight chip on the underside of its base, but it’s not noticeable unless you pick it up to look underneath, and other than that the vases are in great condition for their age!

Dimensions:Each vase measures approx. 20cm tall x 5.5cm in diameter (at base)

Price: R160 / R140 (chip on underside of base)

Small Glass Vase – SOLD

7 Sep

Small glass vase

Small glass vase

I’m not sure how old this little vase is, or where it was made, but the style has a bit of a Scandinavian feel to me – the flat rim of the vase reminds me a lot of some of the vintage Holmegaard pieces. The vase is quite petite, and woould only really be good as a bud vase or as a display piece, but it’s in excellent condition with no signs of wear.

A nice simple piece of glass that would make a great addition to your collection.

Dimensions: 14.5cm tall x10cm in diameter

Price: R120

Miniature Royal Copenhagen Plates – SOLD

4 Sep

Miniature Danish plates

Miniature Danish plates

These little miniature plates, referred to as ‘plaquettes’ by collectors, have a very special place in my heart. My grandmother was Danish and growing up all of my family on my mother’s side had the larger version of these plates, the Royal Copenhagen Christmas plates, on their walls. We had a about six of them in our dining room until our house burned down when I was twelve, and as an adult when I went to visit my great aunt in Berlin I was thrilled to find a wall in her home completely covered in Royal Copenhagen Christmas plates. So aside from thinking that they’re quite beautiful, which they really are, I have an emotional attachment to these little landscapes! The Christmas plates have been produced by Royal Copenhagen every year since 1908, with these miniature versions dating to sometime before 1969 – I think that they made them after this date as well, but the maker’s mark on this particular set of five plaquettes dates to pre-1969.

A lovely little set that would look great hanging on your wall – I used to have some of these plates hanging on a skinny bit of wall in my kitchen and they looked quite lovely!

Dimensions: Each plaquette measures 8cm in diameter

Price: R180 for the set of five
