T.G. Green & Co Gripstand Mixing Bowl

If you’re into your baking it’s almost essential that you have a T.G. Green Gripstand bowl! Doesn’t it just look like the quintessential mixing bowl? Unfortunately there are a few hairline cracks in this bowl which aren’t visible in the photos, but none of the damage is that apparent, and at 60 plus years old it’s not doing that badly! A classic design that’s stood the test of time.

Large TG Green Gripstand Bowl – SOLD

Large TG Green Gripstand mixing bowl

Large TG Green Gripstand mixing bowl

This is the mother of all mixing bowls! It’s hard to tell from the pics, but at 33cm in diameter and 15cm high, this really is a rather large bowl! You’d have no problem mixing your Christmas cake batter in this ginormous bowl! Add to that the fact that it’s a famous TG Green Gripstand bowl and you have one impressive piece of pottery. There’s a bit of wear on the inside, but for its age it’s in pretty good nick – different sources date these bowls from the early 1900s to the mid ’50s, so at the very least it’s in the region of 60 years old. These bowls, which were produced by the same pottery house who made the famous blue and white Cornish ware. were designed so that they could be tilted for mixing batter without losing their ‘grip’. One side of the base is flat enabling it to lean towards the baker without sliding across the table – very clever indeed! The Gripstand bowl is probably one of the most collected and famous mixing bowls, sometimes fetching ludicrous prices – there’s currently one for sale on ebay for over $200!

Vintage TG Green Storage Jars – SOLD

TG Green Spectrum rice & flour jars

TG Green Spectrum rice & flour jars

To look at the bold typeface on these ceramic kitchen jars, you might be tempted to guess that the jars are new, but in fact they’re going on for 30 years now. T.G. Green are the same company responsible for the famous blue and white striped Cornish Ware, and those jelly-mould-style mixing bowls that you see for sale on Mint from time to time. This range of storage jars was a different direction for the company, steered by the influence of designer Judith Onion. Onion was tasked with simplifying the TG Green designs, with the aim of bringing them up to date, and clearly she did a great job – 30 years down the line and these storage jars still look relatively modern. The jars themselves are in excellent condition, but the cork stoppers have seen better days. They’re slightly out of shape and take a good beating with the fists to lodge them into place, but I suppose after 30 years of use it’s impressive that they haven’t disintegrated or been separated from their jars. This funky pair of generously proportioned jars will prove useful in the kitchen, and will look fabulous on display on your kitchen counter!

Dimensions: 16cm tall x 16cm in diameter

Price: R250 for the pair

Green’s Gripstand Mixing Bowl – SOLD

Green's Gripstand Mixing Bowl

Green's Gripstand Mixing Bowl

Green’s Gripstand Mixing Bowl sets the standard when it comes to bowls for mixing batter. I don’t know what it is, but there’s something very appealing about these bowls – perhaps it’s because they look a bit like old fashioned jelly moulds! They’re pretty collectible, and there are a number of modern knock offs floating around. There’re also vintage bowls produced by different manufacturers who obviously realised the strength of this design back in the day. This is the smaller of the sizes these bowls come in, but it’s still reasonably large. There’re some marks on the inside of the bowl that don’t show up that well in the pics, but otherwise it’s a fairly clean piece. A classic design that will see you through years of baking.

Dimensions: 24cm in diameter x 11cm high

Price: R150

Collection of Kitchenalia – SOLD

Collection of kitchenalia

Collection of kitchenalia

This is a rather eclectic, but impressive collection of kitchenalia – if I do say so myself! My favourite piece is probably the small T.G. Green bowl which you use to separate the egg white from the yolk. Not being the most skilled of bakers, I think that something like this would prove rather handy. The vintage slotted spoon is perfect for getting your eggs out of boiling water (I used it last night and it worked a treat!), and the Tala ice cream scooper is a classic – I own a red version of this, and they really are very functional – and cool looking to boot! I’m not sure how often one would use a coconut shredder, but for interest sake alone it’s worth buying. I haven’t had a chance to try out the Kwik Whip mixer or theĀ  Kitchamajig, but with names like those they just have to be cool – although I’m a little dubious at how quick the Kwik Whip really is (the glass jar scares me a wee bit – I think the whipping action might do some damage). And last, but not least, we have the Tala pastry cutters. I think that they date to the 1950s, and are pretty worn, but they really are a lovely set. The box itself is quite special, and while the metal of the pastry cutters is a bit worse for wear, I’m sure that they’re still perfectly fuctional.

P.S. Sadly I managed to break the pie bird after taking this photo, so it’s no longer available.

T.G. Green & Co Gripstand mixing bowl

T.G. Green & Co Gripstand mixing bowl

This T.G. Green & Co mixing bowl has seen plenty of use in its time, but that’s not suprising given that it’s been around for close on 100 years. It’s hard to date these bowls as most of the info available on T.G. Green relates to their famous Cornishware (that classic blue and white crockery), but several sites date this particular maker’s mark to the early 1900s. The prices of these bowls vary greatly, selling for anything from $15 to $100. The prices are dependant on the size of the bowl and their condition. The oustide of the bowl is in pretty much perfect nick, but the inside has some scratch marks caused by stirring (unfortunately not visible in the pics). The shape of the bowl was specifically designed for mixing – one side has a flat panel so that the bowl doesn’t rock from side to side when you tilt it to mix your batter. A classic piece of kitchenalia, perfect for baking or doubling up as a large salad bowl.
