Vintage Tala Pototo Ricer – SOLD

11 Sep

Vintage Tala potato ricer

Vintage Tala potato ricer

I know that this potato ricer’s a bit worse for wear, but it’s still a functional kitchen utensil, and somehow the chipped enamel paint adds a certain charm to it, plus it’s made by Tala, which is always a bonus! The blue handle does tend to slip down from time to time (see pics under ‘more’), but given that it’s not a quick motion (mashing potatoes isn’t like chopping veggies where your hand moves really quickly), I don’t think it’s a big problem if you need to readjust it now and again.

A great kitchen accessory (potato ricers apparently make the creamiest mash!) from a fantastic name in kitchenalia.

Dimensions: 28cm long x 9.5cm in diameter

Vintage Donut Makers – SOLD

Vintage donut makers

Vintage donut makers

How cool are these vintage donut makers? I’d never come across one before moving to Jozi, and now I’ve found two in the space of two weeks! I don’t think I would have had a clue what they were if the first lovely red and white donut maker hadn’t had the remnants of its original box with it! I’ve included a pic of the box as proof that they really are donut makers!

Both ‘machines’ are in great condition for their years (I’d guess that they date to the 1950s), but the red and white one is just slightly cleaner – I’m not sure that it’s ever been used before. The Tala version is also quite lovely (in fact, I think it’s my favourite), with it’s baby pink handle and stainless steel body – and of course the famous Tala stamp.

An unusual pair that I’m pretty certain I won’t come across again anytime soon.

Dimensions: Red plastic donut maker – 18cm tall x 9.5cm in diameter; Metal Tala donut maker – 19cm tall x 9cm in diameter

Tala Potato Ricer – SOLD

Tala potato ricer

Tala potato ricer

It’s been quite a while since I’ve had one of these potato ricers for sale, and even longer since I’ve come across such a good looking version! I love the green enamel detail, and I’m always quite excited when I see a Tala maker’s stamp! There’s the usual wear to the metal, but I’m fairly confident that this ricer will work just fine, and produce the silkiest mashed potatoes!

Dimensions: 28cm long x 9.5cm in diameter

Tala Cook’s Measure – SOLD

23 Oct

Tala Cook's Measure

Tala Cook’s Measure

This is a really nice example of a vintage Tala Cooks Measure – there’s some minor wear to the inside of the measure, as well as the base, but for the most part it’s in excellent nick! The outside of the Cooks Measure has a handy conversion table and the inside has measurements for a variety of dry goods – everything from lentils to sugar and rice. The idea is that you fill the Cooks Measure with whatever you’re using to bake with and ‘shake lightly to level the surface’ to get an accurate measurement.  A clever (and very attractive!) design that’s stood the test of time.

Dimensions: 14cm tall x 10.5cm in diameter

Price: R110

Collection of Kitchenalia – SOLD

Collection of kitchenalia

Collection of kitchenalia

I love seeing all these vintage bits and bobs together – it puts a real smile on my dial! And I always have a favourite, and this time it has to be the tortoise jelly mould – how cool is he! You normally see this type of mould in the standard jelly shape, and if you’re really lucky, in the shape of a bunny, but never before have I seen a tortoise! Fantastic! The little Japanese teapot is also quite wonderful, although sadly it’s missing it’s plastic handle, but it’s such a special piece (and still perfectly functional) that I thought it was well worth showing off. I’m not sure if the Willow Kitchen Measure is a copy of or the precursor to the Tala’s Cook’s Measure, but either way it’s great to see a variation of this classic kitchen accessory. And don’t you just love the ‘acme’ logo on the vintage cheese grater? I particularly like the side of the grater that you’d use for cheddar – it’s going to give you nice chunky strips of cheese! The Italian mocha pot may not look like much, but it’s its size that makes it stand out – it’s a single serving coffee pot which is pretty unusual – it’s especially hard to find genuine Italian models in good working order. And finally we have the Sky-line egg beater! Sadly the paintwork’s been completely stripped from the wooden handles, but mechanically it’s still sound and will do a great job of whisking your eggs for a Sunday fry-up!

Tala Potato Ricer – SOLD

29 Oct

Tala potato ricer

Tala potato ricer

I’m not exactly what you would call a cordon bleu chef – or any type of chef for that matter, but from speaking to people who do spend some serious time in the kitchen, a potato ricer seems to make the best mashed potato you can ask for! And it kind of makes sense when you look at it: the fine holes look like they would make super fine and super creamy mash. And the fact that it’s a Tala, my very favourite brand of vintage kitchenalia, doesn’t hurt matters. A great looking, handy kitchen accessory that will hopefully make you a potato mash legend!
