Villeroy & Boch casserole dish

It’s a funny thing, but I seem to find things in pairs. They might not be exactly the same, but this Villeroy & Boch casserole dish is definitely from the same series as that great black & yellow baking dish that we featured a few weeks back. I’m pretty sure that both pieces are in the Biarritz pattern, designed by V&B in the 1950s. The shape is very ’50s, as is the rather striking colour combo – black combined with brightly coloured glazes was quite popular in mid-century design.

A very handsome casserole dish in near mint condition.

Dimensions: 21cm in diameter x 10cm tall (with lid on)

Price: R240

I think it probably goes without saying that I love the bright yellow glaze on the inside of this Villeroy & Boch baking dish! Bizarrely though, I also quite like the slightly kitsch textured black glaze on the outside of the dish – not only does it contrast beautifully with the yellow, but I think the unusual texture makes for an interesting feature. The dish appears to be in excellent condition for its years – I’m not sure exactly when it was made, but V&B made a pattern called ‘Biarritz’ in the 1950s that had the identical black & yellow colour combo, so it could well be from the same period.

Dimensions: 36cm long x 21cm wide x 5cm deep

P.S. These V&B baking dishes normally sell for around $40 – with our rather sad exchange rate that works out to about R500!

Price: R200

Retro Villeroy & Boch casserole dish

Retro Villeroy & Boch casserole dish

The design of this retro Villeroy & Boch casserole dish really appeals to me! I love the brightly coloured stylised veggies, and how they stand out against the crisp white ceramic body. The handle on the lid sits at an interesting angle, which I assume is on purpose – V&B produce premium quality porcelain ware, so I can’t see them letting something out of their factory that is so obviously squiff! And in addition to being so dashingly handsome I’m pretty sure that this dish can go in the oven – so good looking and practical. What more could you ask for?!

Dimensions: 30cm long x 19cm wide x 15cm tall (with lid on)

Price: R220

Villeroy and Boch Saucepan – SOLD

Small Villeroy & Boch saucepan

Small Villeroy & Boch saucepan

I love the look of this little Villeroy & Boch saucepan! The pattern name is ‘Viking‘ and supposedly dates to the mid-’60s, which explains the bit of wear and tear. The pan is still very neat, but it does have some light scratches, and the white ceramic has dulled a bit from years of use. I see that the saucepan is sometimes referred to as a ‘butter pan’, which maybe makes sense in terms of its size – it’s not the largest of saucepans!

A very cool piece of mid-centurey cookware with a great Scandi look to it.

Note: The small pot version of this pan sells for around $40 online.

Dimensions: 20cm in diameter x 3cm deep; 31cm long (incl. handle)

Price: R140

Villeroy and Boch Snack Dish – SOLD

Villeroy & Boch snack dish

Villeroy & Boch snack dish

I absolutely love the design on this retro Villeroy & Boch snack dish! In hunting for the pattern name I came across a less stylised version, entitled ‘Taraxacum Officinale’ (dandelion), which looks to me to be a later interpretation of the same design – very interesting that they would come back to a pattern so many years later. Personally, I prefer this design which to my mind is far more striking, and even though it likely predates the Taraxacum Officinale pattern, it has a much more modern feel to it.

A very stylish piece from a well respected name.

Note: The underside of the dish has some stained crazing, but the rest of the dish is in good condition. Please also pay attention to the dimensions below (I’m worried that the dish looks bigger in the pics than it is!)

Dimensions: 27cm long x 18cm wide x 3cm deep

Price: R140

Villeroy and Boch Snack Plates – SOLD

9 Feb

Villeroy & Boch snack plates

Villeroy & Boch snack plates

It looks like these Villeroy & Boch plates were originally designed for fondue, but I think that they’d make great snack plates, which I suppose is what fondue really is – a meal made up of bite-sized snacks! I assume the divisions would have been used to keep your different pieces of meat or fruit separate, but they’d also be perfect for separating your carrots from your snap peas, or your hummus from your tzatziki.

The ideal snack platter – not too large (you don’t want your offerings to look too miserly swimming about on a massive plate!) and beautifully decorated – those colours are so crazy that no one’s going to notice if your julienned carrots aren’t quite up to scratch!

Dimensions: Each plate measures 25cm in diameter

Price: R75 per plate (5 plates available – 3 birds, two flowers)
