Wood’s Ware Butter Dish – SOLD

3 Oct

Beryl Wood's Ware butter dish

Beryl Wood’s Ware butter dish

I’ve been a lover (and hunter) of Wood’s Ware for many years now, but I don’t think I’ve ever come across the butter dish before! Aside from that lovely soft green-grey glaze, I really like the twirl of the handle, and that swooping shape of the lid – although I’m not sure how practical that makes it in terms of storing a brick of butter? Sadly there’s a small bit of damage to the one corner, as well as some minor marks to the underside of the lid, but it definitely doesn’t render the dish unusable. A great piece of 1940s crockery in reasonably good nick for its years.

Dimensions: 12cm tall x 16cm long x 13.5cm wide

Price: R130

Pair of Small Wood’s Ware Jugs – SOLD

16 Nov

Pair of Jasmine Wood's Ware jugs

Pair of Jasmine Wood’s Ware jugs

This pair of 1940s Wood’s Ware jugs are a little worse for wear, but I suppose that’s what happens when you’re part of a working dinner service that’s been going at it for 60 or so years. I bought this pair of jugs from the house of a 95 year old lady who had clearly used this service as her everyday crockery. There was a full set (cups, plates – the full works), but most of it was quite badly damaged from years and years of use. This pair have a bit of crazing and some flea bite chips on their bases, but nothing too serious – I suppose jugs get off lightly compared to breakfast bowls! A sweet pair with those beautiful ridged lines that Wood’s Ware are so famous for.

Dimensions: Each jug measures 10cm tall x 10cm in diameter (at their widest)

Price: R70 each

Retro Wood and Sons Espresso Set – SOLD

2 Oct

Set of 6 LIMA espresso cups & saucers by Wood & Sons

Set of 6 LIMA espresso cups & saucers by Wood & Sons

It’s not often that I come across a complete set of retro cups and saucers in mint condition, so I was super-excited to find this great Wood & Sons set. With the exception of some manufacturing defects in the glaze, this set is pretty much perfect. And how fantastic is that crazy pattern on the saucers?! I can’t find a definitive date, but going on the maker’s mark, the design of the pattern and the colour of the glaze, I’d guess that the set dates to the 1970s.  If you’re a collector of retro ceramics and have been hunting for the perfect espresso set, then this is the set set for you – a seriously retro design in fantastic condition.

Dimensions: Cups – 6.5cm tall x 6cm in diameter; Saucers – 12.5cm in diameter

Price: R150

Wood’s Ware Part Tea Set – SOLD

18 May

Jasmin Wood's Ware teapot

Jasmine Wood's Ware teapot

Tea for two? Sadly that’s all that’s remaining of this great Wood’s Ware tea set, but I know that there are quite a few collectors out there who make up Wood’s Ware services bit by bit (it’s hard to find a complete set of this 1940s design) so I thought that it was still worth buying. The part tea set consists of a teapot, a sugar bowl and two tea cups, saucers, sideplates and bowls (I forgot to take pics of the bowls!). The set is in pretty good nick, and shows off the ridged lines of the design beautifully. I love the simplicity of Wood’s pottery- their use of strong angular lines, which are contrasted with soft glazes and small details that soften the overall design. A classic design (one of my very favourites!)  that’s stood the test of time.

Dimensions: Teapot – 15cm tall x 15 cm in diameter; Sugar bowl – 4cm tall x 8 cm in diameter; Cups – 7cm tall x 9cm in diameter; Saucers  – 14cm in diameter; Bowls – 17cm in diameter; Sideplates – 23cm in diameter

Price: R250 for the set

Jasmine Wood’s Ware Jug – SOLD

7 Mar

Jasmine Wood's Ware jug

Jasmine Wood's Ware jug

I’ve had a love affair with Wood’s Ware from the moment I spotted my first Beryl cup and saucer! I love all Wood’s Ware, but I have to say that the Beryl glaze is probably my most favourite. The glaze used on this jug is called Jasmine, and sadly it’s starting to show its age: there are some dark marks on the inside of the jug that won’t wash clean. There’s also a mark on the rim of the jug, but I think that this is actually a manufacturing defect, and not caused by wear. This ridged style that Wood’s Ware did so beautifully dates to the 1940s, so it’s not that suprising that there’s a bit of wear and tear. The perfect jug for serving hot custard (I know it’s not a summer dish, but in my mind custard’s an all year round treat!).

Dimensions: 12cm tall x 12cm in diameter

Price: R95

Pair of Wood’s Ware Serving Dishes – SOLD

Pair of Wood's Ware serving dishes

Pair of Wood's Ware serving dishes

I have a very special place in my heart for Wood’s Ware. There’s just something so special about the shape of their ceramic ware and  the colours they used. Wood’s Ware is immediately recognisable by their use of ridged lines – it’s strange that something so simple could become a trade mark! Unfortunately the ridges aren’t that clear in these pics, but they’re there. Have a look at some of the other Wood’s Ware items I’ve sold to see what I’m talking about. This pair of casserole dishes are in near mint condition – there’re one or two very faint marks in the glaze, but other than that they’re pretty much perfect – which is very impressive given that they’re in the region of 60 years old (the maker’s mark dates to the 1940s)!

Dimensions: 23cm in diameter x 12cm high (with lid on)

Price: R150 each
